Witches on WhatsApp EP1

I lay on my bed, fingers gliding across my phone screen, scrolling through WhatsApp statuses. My friends’ lives played out in short clips—someone at a fancy restaurant, another on vacation, and then—Lara.

A brand-new car.

The sleek black sedan sparkled under the sun as she posed beside it, her smile so wide it made my chest tighten. A dull ache spread inside me. Lara? Getting a car before me?

I sat up, rolling my eyes.

How dare she?

The girl had always acted like the world revolved around her. Back in school, she was the best graduating student, walking around with an air of self-importance. I still remember the day I greeted her, my voice bright with politeness. She looked right past me, as if I didn’t exist. That was Lara—always looking down on others.

But life has a way of humbling people. And if it doesn’t, I do.

I stretched my legs up against the wall, closed my eyes, and whispered a spell. Just a little misfortune. Just a little lesson. Nothing too much.

Two weeks later, I heard her car had broken down. The engine? Damaged beyond repair.

I smiled as I typed out a message.

“So sorry, dear. I know how hard you worked for this. Maybe next time, be careful with what you post. Not everyone has good eyes.”

She replied with a sad face emoji. I knew she had no idea who was watching.

Life went on. Work, late-night phone calls, small gossip with my neighbor, my usual morning coffee with a slice of bread. I went about my day like any other person—because that’s the thing, we blend in.

Then, a year later, another status.

This time, it wasn’t a car.

It was an engagement ring.

I stared at my screen, heart pounding. Lara, engaged?

I couldn’t let this happen.

She had gotten away with too much already—good grades, expensive things, and now, love? No. I had to do something.

You might be wondering why.

Why should I care? Why does it matter?

There are witches on WhatsApp.

Or did you think we don’t use cell phones?
